The Right To Wear My Hair

There are a lot of cultural pressures and identity issues that come with having "black hair" in America.  But one of the areas where we continue to be challenged is in the work place.  Even today, in 2017, black women are still being discriminated against for the hair styles they wear, which include: braids, the afro and locs.  However, there is no discrimination if she chooses to straighten her hair.  Women who wear these styles have been asked to change them and if they don't they have been fired.  These were not crazy styles, or something that would be considered unprofessional.  These were beautiful braided styles, twists, neatly groomed afros and cornrows. And the discrimination didn't just come from white people, but even from other black women! The expectation is that you straighten your hair.  This is not just a past issue from twenty years ago, this is happening today, and it could still happen in the future if we don't continue to fight for the right to wear our hair the way we want.

The following video is a TED Talk done by Pamela Ferrell called "What Does the Shape of your Hair Say About You?" It expounds on some of the experience she has had in working with women who have been fired due to their hair style and she also teaches us a different way to look at hair in general.
